What Better Way to Escape the Winter Blahs than a Vacation to the Beach
- January 6th, 2010When Dr. Kim Westermann and her husband Bart Doerhoefer want rest and relaxation, their favorite vacation destination is the Westin St. John Resort and Villas in the US Virgin Islands. They have been taking family and friends there for the last seven years, and really enjoy the laid back atmosphere, beautiful beaches and fabulous restaurants.
“The best Derby Party we ever attended was at Skinny Legs in Coral Bay” Kim said. “A Georgetown, Kentucky couple owns the restaurant/bar. They import real Derby glasses and memorabilia, cook up traditional Kentucky Derby Party food and drinks. They have jackpots and horse betting. The locals come with their beach hats, decorated with bougainvillea, instead of roses! We didn’t win any money, but had a great time!”
You can visit St. John by flying into St. Thomas or on a cruise ship. Many of the cruise lines sail to the St. Thomas port, including Royal Caribbean, Princess, Cunard, Regent Seven Seas and Holland America. St John Island is a short ferry ride away. While on the island, visit St. John’s Trunk Bay, one of the top ten beaches in the world.
St John is the smallest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands that includes St Thomas and St Croix, therefore doesn’t require a passport. St John Island covers an area of only 28 square miles, two-thirds of which is devoted to the Virgin Islands National Park. Because of the National Park Service, the island remains pristine with unspoiled beauty. The park has an extensive network of trails for hiking along with an amazing underwater snorkeling trail. Scuba diving is another major attraction on St John.
If you get bored with the St. John paradise, St. Thomas and duty free shopping is just a short ferry ride away.
While sitting on the beach in St. John, Kim and her friend Diane Ormerod, came up with the idea to start an organization to bring women together who want to maintain a positive attitude about life, while dealing with the aging process. “In February, I organized with Kathy Collins of Cruise Planners, the first “Girls Getaway Cruise” to Cancun Mexico!” Kim said. “A cruise is a great way for girlfriends to spend time together shopping, sunning, and visiting the spa. We enjoyed all the onboard entertainment, from the casino to the bingo parlor. By the pool, we had too many cute little umbrella drinks to count! A fabulous time was had by all!!”
Dr. Westermann, a Univ. of Louisville graduate, has practiced general dentistry in the Springhurst area of Louisville for 22 years and has been active in organized dentistry and served on the Board of Dentistry.
