Louisville Medical Professionals Are Also Artists with Wood

Monday, December 19th, 2011

By Marc Jennings - Valeo Magazine

Morton Kasdan, M.D., a plastic surgeon, is one with his work, his concentration complete, controlling the instrument in his hands. The result will be beautiful.

Dr. Kasdan is turning a piece of wood on a lathe, shaping it with a sharp tool, deliberately, but also learning what visual surprises the wood holds.  He is one of a number of local physicians who make things from wood. It’s natural enough – that healers are also artists.

“You use your hands and your brain,” Dr. Kasdan says.

Stain Removers and Exterior Cleaners For Your Home

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

From American Painting Contractor, May 2011

Black spots must be removed prior to painting the exterior of your home. They could be dirt, which will interfere with coating adhesion, but chances are they are mold and mildew.

Mold and mildew stains are usually black and often mistaken for dirt. While an ordinary exterior cleaner can remove dirt, the removal of mold requires a stronger solution. An easy way to tell if a stain is mold or mildew is to apply a drop of household bleach to the discolored area. If the discoloration disappears, it’s mold.

Lights! Camera! Home Theater!

By Cathy Hill and Kevin Gibson, Valeo Magazine

For some local doctors and their families, one of life’s greatest pleasures is settling into their own home theater to enjoy a movie or a ball game. “We’ve had a lot of fun with it,” said Baptist Medical Associates internist Dr. Jill Watson of her family’s home theater. As Jill’s husband Mike says, “I always wanted one. . . and now I couldn’t live without it.” The Watsons are big University of Kentucky fans, and enjoy having friends over to watch UK ball games. In addition, Jill hosts an occasional “girl’s night” and the family has regular movie nights with their children, “Complete with popcorn - the whole experience,” Dr. Watson says.

Playing Music Is Good Medicine For Local Health Care Execs

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

By Kevin Hyde, Valeo Magazine

In the 2000 film Almost Famous, Cameron Crowe’s semi-autobiographical love letter to classic rock, the young music writer starts every interview with the simple question: “Why do you love music?” For most musicians, the question is almost like asking, “Why do you love oxygen?”

That’s certainly the case for members of the Remedy, a local classic rock and dance band that was founded when a group of musically gifted executives at Baptist Health Systems (BHS) decided to provide the entertainment at a biannual management retreat. They enjoyed the experience so much they decided to keep playing—and they’ve been playing ever since.

Doctors Afield—Healing the Children in Ecuador

“It’s a divine opportunity to give something back.”

So says Louisville plastic surgeon Dr. Juan Luis Quintero as he stands outside an operating room in the Hospital General Rodriguez Zambrano, in Manta, Ecuador. This is his motivation for being there - for spending a week away from work - well, working harder than ever.

Dr. Quintero was one of 17 local medical professionals in service with Healing the Children Kentucky (HTCK). HTCK shares the mission of its national organization - to provide quality medical care to those children who would not have access to it otherwise.
