Doctors Afield—Healing the Children in Ecuador

“It’s a divine opportunity to give something back.”

So says Louisville plastic surgeon Dr. Juan Luis Quintero as he stands outside an operating room in the Hospital General Rodriguez Zambrano, in Manta, Ecuador. This is his motivation for being there - for spending a week away from work - well, working harder than ever.

Dr. Quintero was one of 17 local medical professionals in service with Healing the Children Kentucky (HTCK). HTCK shares the mission of its national organization - to provide quality medical care to those children who would not have access to it otherwise.

On the Water: Kayaking Offers Area Doctors a Dose of Fear and Fun

Rumor has it that the medical profession — with its combination of life-and-death emergency situations and the intrigue of figuring out what ails patients — provides enough excitement for most physicians. Hence, the tendency for many doctors to unwind on relatively calm, quiet golf courses.

But a few local physicians are drawn to the more extreme, adrenaline-rush scenarios of kayaking on jungle rivers.

Dr. Frank Bonnarens, an orthopedic surgeon with Jewish Physician Group, took up the sport in the early 1990s at the suggestion of one of his colleagues at Andrews Air Force Base.

So often the marvel of glass is its transparent quality. We’re surrounded by so much of the stuff that we naturally lose sight of it. It keeps out the wind and rain while letting in the light. We use it for preserving and storing our food and beverages. We drink from it. But beyond all its ubiquitous, functional, industrial forms, a small fraction of unique glass objects are made by hand – not in factories, but in small studios.

Dressing Well Pays Dividends

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

By Kenneth R. Grossman: President, Executive Image

There is all sorts of evidence that dressing well “pays dividends”. In a study conducted by Kelton Research it was determined that well-dressed men are seen as sexier, smarter, and more successful. The study showed that 91% of Americans think dressing well can make a man appear more physically attractive than he actually is, 75% of Americans believe well-dressed men are more successful at work, and some 78% of women think one of the hottest things a man can do is dress well. In fact some 85% think a man who dresses well is sexier than one with a lot of money. The study revealed that nearly three out of four men feel underdressed most of the time, so it’s no wonder that so many dislike and lack confidence in shopping for clothing.

Preserving a Home’s Most Distinctive Features With The Door Store and Windows’ Marvin Replacement Windows

Friday, October 15th, 2010

By Catherine Hill

For rheumatologist Dr. Michael Edwards and his wife Dr. Catherine Edwards, the four bay windows on their house in Ballantrae, off Hwy. 22, are their home’s most distinctive interior and exterior features. “The window placement is unique to the neighborhood. They let in a lot of natural light,” said Catherine Edwards, an OB/GYN who is currently a “stay-at-home mom” for the couple’s three children, twins Austin and Daniel, age nine, and Luke, age six.

That is why the Edwards were determined to replace their windows once the windows and frames started showing signs of deterioration.
