Doctors Afield—Healing the Children in Ecuador

“It’s a divine opportunity to give something back.”

So says Louisville plastic surgeon Dr. Juan Luis Quintero as he stands outside an operating room in the Hospital General Rodriguez Zambrano, in Manta, Ecuador. This is his motivation for being there - for spending a week away from work - well, working harder than ever.

Dr. Quintero was one of 17 local medical professionals in service with Healing the Children Kentucky (HTCK). HTCK shares the mission of its national organization - to provide quality medical care to those children who would not have access to it otherwise.

Rumor has it that the medical profession — with its combination of life-and-death emergency situations and the intrigue of figuring out what ails patients — provides enough excitement for most physicians. Hence, the tendency for many doctors to unwind on relatively calm, quiet golf courses.

But a few local physicians are drawn to the more extreme, adrenaline-rush scenarios of kayaking on jungle rivers.

Dr. Frank Bonnarens, an orthopedic surgeon with Jewish Physician Group, took up the sport in the early 1990s at the suggestion of one of his colleagues at Andrews Air Force Base.

So often the marvel of glass is its transparent quality. We’re surrounded by so much of the stuff that we naturally lose sight of it. It keeps out the wind and rain while letting in the light. We use it for preserving and storing our food and beverages. We drink from it. But beyond all its ubiquitous, functional, industrial forms, a small fraction of unique glass objects are made by hand – not in factories, but in small studios.

Local Medical Professionals Have Their Say on EMR

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

With incentives for implementation of electronic medical recordkeeping (EMR) beginning this year, Louisville-area hospital systems, physician practices and EMR providers are scrambling to get with the program – with mixed results.

The Early Adopters

Some local medical operations have been developing EMR for years, as systems evolved from 1980’s-era practice management modules such as billing, scheduling and document imaging.

“We have been doing EMR since 1996. We are 70 to 80 percent complete,” said Tom Carrico, Corporate IT Director for the Baptist Healthcare System. “We have had McKesson clinical and financial systems in the hospitals since the mid to late ‘90’s, and we decided to stay the course, and retain McKesson as our EMR provider.”

How to Still Get Yields Up to 7% with Low Risk

With yields near historic lows, Treasures simply aren’t cutting it as the mainstays of income portfolios -and rates on bank CDs are pitiful.  The yield on a standard laddered one- to ten-year Treasury bond portfolio is 1.5% - hardly worth the trouble.  On a $500,000 portfolio, that’s $7,500, or $4,875 after income taxes at the highest marginal rate.  Even worse, many investors are sitting in ultra-short (30, 60, 90-day) Treasuries and money market funds paying LESS than 1% yields.

Ignorance May Not Be Bliss

If ignorance is bliss then why are so many investors so uncomfortable?

Unless you like earning less than 1% interest on the money you squirreled away at the bank, then it is imperative that you understand the following information.  Ignorance of the law is no excuse and neither is ignorance of the facts:

According to the National Fire Protection Association and the U.S. Census Bureau, the odds your home will have a fire in a year are 1 in 309.7 or 0.32%.
